It is 1850. Jess befriends 16-year-old Samuel, who is expected to take over his deceased father's job as the village baker. Samuel dreams of travelling the world and "being somebody." At the spur of the moment, when a minstrel troupe performs in the village square, Samuel decides to run away with them and travel the world.
