The post-Civil war generation of the Dutton family travels to Texas, and joins a wagon train undertaking the arduous journey west to Oregon, before settling in Montana to establish what would eventually become the Yellowstone Ranch.

Ultimately the story is a setup to show where the Duttons come from and how they become the landowners and ranchers you see in Yellowstone. The scenery is just amazing and does a fantastic job of immersing you in what must have been like to be on this epic trail west. And the acting? Just a treat to watch, from the regular focal Dutton family characters and the leaders of the wagon train to the extra families that are also hoping to find a new life in the West.
