Late at night, with the glow of the TV set illuminating their post-pub comedown, a generation of film fans were transported to wonderful new places by Moviedrome, the BBC's cult film series. Broadcast between 1988 and 2000, the show - fronted by Alex Cox in its first iteration, then Mark Cousins in its later run - introduced viewers to spaghetti westerns, strange Sci-Fi, under-appreciated crime thrillers and the odd big budget blunder. The films weren't necessarily good, but they always had something that made them interesting, while Cox and Cousin's intros - passionate, informed and fun - pushed film criticism in new, exciting directions. Moviedrome: Welcome to the Cult, made for BFI Player by filmmaker Nic Wassell, explores Moviedrome's history, its impact and its legacy. We talk to the show's creator, Nick Freand Jones, its original host, Alex Cox, and fans including broadcaster Samira Ahmed and comedian Stewart Lee.
