Diary of a Wimpy Kid Ratings & Reviews
- Manuel FrangisMarch 21, 2025I just watched Diary of a Wimpy Kid and I would give it 3 out of 5 stars. I never read the books because they never seemed cool or good but I figured I would check out the movie to see what all the hype was about. It is a decent family comedy with some funny moments but it did not really grab me the way I hoped. The story follows Greg Heffley a middle schooler who wants to be popular but constantly finds himself in embarrassing situations. He has to deal with bullies annoying classmates a weird best friend and his own bad decisions that make everything worse. It is a simple setup that works well for a comedy but it never goes much deeper than that. Zachary Gordon does a solid job as Greg. He captures the character’s overconfidence and cluelessness really well making him feel like a real kid. The problem is that Greg is not always likable. He is constantly making bad choices and treating his friends poorly which makes it hard to fully root for him at times. Robert Capron as Rowley is one of the best parts of the movie. He is the total opposite of Greg—positive cheerful and completely unaware of how uncool he is. His friendship with Greg leads to a lot of funny moments and he honestly steals the show in a lot of scenes. The way Greg treats Rowley is frustrating at times but that is part of the point of the story. The humor is a mix of awkward middle school situations slapstick comedy and exaggerated reactions. Some of the jokes land really well and feel like things that could actually happen in real life. Others feel a little forced or repetitive. If you like simple family friendly humor you will probably enjoy it but if you are looking for something more clever it might not hit as well. The animation style from the books is used in some scenes which is a nice touch. It helps bring the world of Diary of a Wimpy Kid to life in a way that feels unique. The movie mostly sticks to a realistic setting but adding in the animated parts makes it feel a little more connected to the original style of the books. One thing I noticed is that the movie does not have much of a strong plot. It feels more like a series of random events rather than a solid story with a beginning middle and end. That makes it feel a little disconnected at times like you are just watching a bunch of different situations instead of one big story. The pacing is decent but there are some slow moments where not much is happening. Some scenes could have been funnier or had more energy to keep things moving. It is not boring but it is not as engaging as some other family comedies. The reason I am giving it 3 instead of a higher rating is that while it has some fun moments it does not feel like a movie that really stands out. It is a decent adaptation with some laughs but nothing that made me want to rewatch it. The characters are interesting but not always likable and the humor is hit or miss. Overall Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a simple fun movie that will probably be more enjoyable for kids than for older audiences. It has some funny moments and good performances but it does not do much beyond that. I had a decent time watching it but it is not a movie I would rush to see again.
