A barber from a small town in the interior is told that his aunt had left, when she died, a large residence in Rio de Janeiro. Once there, he sees that his heritage is summed up in just thirteen chairs. Discouraged and penniless, the provincial decides to sell the chairs in the first furniture house he finds. The next day, however, he discovers that his aunt had left him a million cruzeiros, hidden in the upholstery of one of the chairs. He and his partner then begin the desperate search for the thirteen chairs, already dispersed, as they were sold to different owners. With the addresses of the people who acquired them, the two heirs look for all the chairs, until, finally, it is precisely in the last one that they realize the money is there. But, by mistake, the chair ends up in an orphanage, where the money is received with the greatest joy. The poor barber does not feel the courage to claim his inheritance and goes back to his land, resigned to the luck of having almost been a millionaire.
