The Luthier

Directed by Richard Jung
2019    7m
The Luthier observes Andreas Hudelmayer handcrafting a high-end violin in his small workshop in Peckham, London. The craft of the Luthier is learned from doing. It takes many years to develop the woodworking skills required to make a beautiful handcrafted object. For that object to also function as a discerning musician's tool takes craft to another level. The skill, expertise and patience required is the antithesis to the instant gratification and throw away culture of our modern world. A handcrafted instrument is both a work of art and also a useful tool built to last. Above all, the secret ingredient is caring. Andreas has a deep love for music and while he describes himself as "on the fringes of the professional musical world" he finds deep satisfaction in helping the music by building the instruments. This love is literally built into each and every instrument he crafts.
