The gang steal cars to escape in after robberies. The robberies are to fund their car racing.In this case, the gang steal a car that has already been souped up by the owner without telling the insurance company. A passer-by tries to stop the thieves coming out of the bank and is shot and later dies. The police don't have too much to go on but manage to nab the gang later.
