Simchas and Sorrows Reviews
Movie Nation
Roger Moore
An unfortunately drab little movie entirely too tentative for its own good.
The Black Cape (Medium)
Jonita Davis
The story is easy to comprehend but may prove too dull in several places for those who have no connection to the Jewish culture. Rabbi Cohen offers some goods but not enough. I certainly wanted to fast forward to the Rabbi's sermons and skip the rest.
Orca Sound
Carey-Ann Pawsey
A film like this one (obviously shot on a small budget) is going to be successful if it feels authentic. This one has that in spades. It always feels like you are watching a couple of your friends work through something.
Film Threat
Alan Ng
Simchas And Sorrows works because it's a personal story that feels authentic.
Denerstein Unleashed
Robert Denerstein
No arguing with the message, but a last-minute revelation feels like a cop-out and, to me at least, it didn't feel as if the movie had fully engaged with its subject.
Shockya.com
Harvey S. Karten
Bittersweet tale of an atheism who is converting to Judaism without great fanfare.
Splice Today
Stephen Silver
Skillfully navigates about a half-dozen of modern Judaism's most frought topics, but is nevertheless too long by about a half hour
Easy Reader (California)
Neely Swanson
Just sit back and enjoy. You don't always need a masterpiece to have a good time.
Crooked Marquee
Josh Bell
Winds through their relationship for nearly two hours, only to end up with shortcuts and compromises that seem dissatisfying for both the couple and the audience.
