Directed by Kalle KaarnaTakes place during the Finnish Civil War. Artist Halli falls in love with Varpu Tanhua, who is also courted by the rich Rustinolli Ristiniemi. Feeling obligated, Halli goes to Germany to learn war skills for the benefit of Finland. When he returns home as an icebreaker, the combat situation in his home village escalates.
