But Chinese President Xi Jinping has no intention of restoring freedom to this population of 6.5 million. As a faithful follower of Mao's expansionist work and his dreams of rediscovered greatness, he knows only too well what China stood to gain from this brutal annexation: control over mineral deposits and the continent's largest freshwater reserves, as well as a new balance of power with its neighbor India.
