What is Pigalle the name of in 2019? Today, the "red" district of Paris has lost much of what has forged its sulphurous reputation. Gentrification has made it commonplace, between mass tourism, family life and trendy places for hipsters, which replace the bars with coaches. Now, some want to rename Pigalle "SoPi" (for South Pigalle), a registered trademark. Standardization often excludes the most modest, and makes "this square, these three streets, this end of the sidewalk", as one resident describes it, to other fashionable districts such as Soho in London. But has Pigalle's soul really disappeared? Are there not pockets of resistance, a culture, a memory of what this zone of adventure and danger was?
