In 1958, when the country, caught in the turmoil of the Algerian war, was torn apart, President René Coty called on the "most illustrious of the French", General de Gaulle, to form a government. This then sets up the Fifth Republic, a regime which remains unique in the world and is based on the election of the president by universal suffrage. This concentrates an impressive number of powers. Since then, France continues, with each presidential election, to seek the providential man. From the start, this system aroused many criticisms, which grew during Nicolas Sarkozy's "hyper-presidency" and did not disappear with the "normality" advocated by François Hollande.
