Anna Feodotovna Tomski, an old Russian countess, is said to be in possession of the "secret of the cards" that the famous magician Cagliostro once entrusted to her at the court of France. Her grandson Paul, an inveterate gambler, would like to have the secret so that he will no longer lose at the game, but the one who seems to be ready to do anything to obtain it is a German officer, Hermann, who claims to be in love with Lise, the countess' ward.
