The third part of the Job series. The pious Jew Mendel Singer lives in the Zuchnow ghetto with his wife and children Miriam, Schemarjah and Jonas. Mendel imparted knowledge of the Bible to the boys of the Jewish community. A fourth child is born to him, Menuchim, a sick, feeble being. The two older sons have to go to the military. Schemaryah fled across the border into Austria, which consumed all of the family's savings. In the end, Shemariah managed to escape to America.
