The most important film festival in the world was created in Cannes, in 1939, in response to the terrible rise of fascism and Nazism, which was also reflected in the films selected at the prestigious Venice festival (established in 1932). From the outset, the organizers of Cannes set out to hold a festival celebrating freedom in the world and in the cinema.
