Baby Catchers of the Amazon

Directed by Stephanie Pommez
2005    52m    TV-G
Deep in the Amazon jungle, the hospital is a long drive away and expectant mothers dread the long drive. Coming to their aid are specially trained midwives, many who have plied their craft their whole lives. The women of the villages trust these midwives, many of whom they have known their whole life, rather than trusting doctors they may have never met, in a faraway hospital. Because the Amazon basin is filled with strong superstitions the midwives' practice involves a mix of traditional customs and catholic beliefs. This stark documentary is filled with vivid images of the Amazon, personal portraits of its people, and intimate encounters with live births.
