Auf der Jagd nach dem Glück

Directed by Benjamin Rost
2020    60m
Filmmaker Benjamin Rost poetically portrays three men who illegally search a diamond field for the precious stones that will change their lives forever. In this way, a piece of South African life unfolds. The rubble field where it all takes place is on the edge of the desert, bordering the ocean. It has been torn up like a field by the many excavators and machines that have dug up the soil here for European companies for decades. Underneath, deep underground, still lie the remains of the purest diamonds in the world. For some years now, the only reminder of these glorious days of the diamond business has been a fence that shakes in the wind and a warning sign: Do not enter. The area here is considered one of the poorest in South Africa, with the highest unemployment in the country. The first dozen "diamond diggers" quickly grew into thousands, so that the understaffed police in this desert wasteland could no longer take action. Day and night, they have been digging with bare hands for the tiny stones for almost two years now: a new diamond rush in South Africa that has spread like wildfire along the west coast. It should also help the former drug addict Vianey to a better life and revives the dream of Nelson Mandela in the homeless chef Patrick. Only diamond diver George, who was once a millionaire, hangs barefoot on the beach after his memories of the good old days. The film not only shows the individual fates of these men on the so-called "Digging Fields". It traces a universal feeling that is just as valid in Europe as on the other side of the globe: the search for happiness. The film shows how important hope is in order to survive in this inhospitable desert. "In the Pursuit of Happiness" not only shows the fates of these men on the so-called "Digging Fields" . The film also traces a universal feeling that is just as valid for us in Europe as it is on the other side of the globe: the search for happiness.
