RoboCop is Paul Verhoeven’s first American film—and it does not disappoint. This sci-fi masterpiece may have a relatively short runtime, but it packs in an incredible amount of story and style. Peter Weller’s portrayal of Alex Murphy, a.k.a. RoboCop, is unforgettable, and his iconic look signals the changing times to come. The film is chilling at times, exploring the struggle between man and machine in ways that still feel relevant today. It’s also undeniably violent, with squib work unlike anything I’d ever seen before. I especially enjoyed the spliced news segments that give a satirical snapshot of this future world. Two main villains drive the conflict: Ronny Cox as Dick Jones, representing the greedy mega-corporation OCP, and Kurtwood Smith as the ruthless street criminal who does Jones’s dirty work. Both are formidable in their own right. RoboCop is now a cult classic and, in my opinion, has never been surpassed by any of its sequels or reboots. A truly great American debut for Verhoeven and a clear taste of the bold filmmaking he would bring to Hollywood.
