What makes the film charming is its polite irreverence. Palin, always the affable straight man, bumbles through scandalous situations with wide-eyed earnestness. Maggie Smith adds her usual sly brilliance as the aristocratic benefactor with rather unorthodox methods of support, while Trevor Howard grumbles his way through as the bishop who’s had quite enough.
