In rural Western Massachusetts, 11-year-old Lacy spends the summer of 1991 at home, enthralled by her own imagination and the attention of her mother, Janet. As the months pass, three visitors enter their orbit, all captivated by Janet.
I’m going to have a very difficult times expressing in words what I liked about this film, but I just really really liked it. Julianne Nicholson and Zoey Ziegler play mother daughter duo Janet and Lacy, respectively. Janet has curated a sort of hippy-ish, new age-y existence and Lacy (more or less) manages to tolerate it, enduring her mothers various relationships. Zoey is fantastic as Lacy, providing for many of the films comic relief moments with a mere glance or a sideways eye. It’s a quiet film, but the sound feels like an ever present character in the film—crickets chirping, lawnmower mowing, an inaudible conversation in the background, the Clarissa Explains It All theme song blaring through the tv. This certainly won’t be everyone’s speed, but I loved the performances, the understated humor and the warmth of this mother daughter relationship.
